My Biography

Civil Servant

In his current position as the Family Leadership Coordinator, working for the New York City Department of Education in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, Timothy creates workshops, organizes community events, and so much more. Serving 25 schools and 18,000 families, he is the district point-person for the My Brother’s Keeper Challenge Grant, an $2M opportunity that brings training and professional development to district leadership, and many wonderful opportunities for engagement for students and families.

Under Timothy’s watch, parents have been led through small business ownership workshops (among others) where parents from the community have incorporated their ideas and passions and are now vendors with the Department of Education, an opportunity that is breaking generational poverty and turning the “maybe one day” into a ‘right now” reality. Other parents have been assisted with resume building workshops and have received job readiness support and have been obtaining work, as well as additional coaching and support from Timothy, as they see their dreams come true.

Non-Profit Executive Leadership

Timothy worked in the non-profit industry for over 17 years, successfully creating ‘STEAM’ programs that served over 35,000 K-12th grade students for both day-school and after-school programming.  He obtained his Executive Leadership Certification from the Support Center for Non-Profit Management and went on to follow his passion of leadership and service by becoming the Executive Director of Doing Art Together (DAT), a 33-year-old visual arts agency based in Harlem, NY. During his tenure, Mr. Coleman increased the annual budget by 40% while simultaneously reducing operational costs by refining systems to help the organization more effectively serve its mission. The non-profit has never seen a more productive and inclusive period than when Timothy was at the helm.

Prior to joining DAT, Timothy was the New York Director of Field Operations for BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life, now called BellExcel). He managed a team of 15 Full-Time Program Directors, a $10M operations budget and oversaw services for 6,000 students annually. Mr. Coleman’s original program, “My Passport to the World”, served over 3,300 students in Bronx Districts 7, 9 and 12 for three summers as a part of the Dept. of Education’s Summer Quest initiative.

Mr. Coleman is a member of the 2015/2016 PASE (Partnership for After-School Education) Executive Leadership Series for Small Agencies, and The NY STEM Initiative, sponsored by ExpandED.

Prior to working in non-profit, Timothy performed on Broadway and had his original music on a Grammy Nominated Jazz/Funk album in 2001.

Rise Up.png

Understanding My Why

My name is Timothy ‘StoneDancer’ Coleman, and I am the Founder/CEO of Coleman Global Initiative, L.L.C.

I grew up in a home of service. My father, Rev. Donald L. Coleman, was an Army veteran who fought in the Vietnam War, and, upon retirement, started a non-profit organization that he ran for over 25 years. My mother, Rev. Ann. L. Byrd-Coleman has been an ordained minister for over 30 years and was the co-pastor of the church we grew up in. She is also an author with an upcoming book release in 2022.

Within my immediate and extended families, there are many servicemen and servicewomen, frontline workers, and folks that continue to find innovative ways to serve in their respective fields. In the end, it all comes down to being in service to our community.

What do I know about service?

I have been in service to NYC communities for many years. A cashier at Tower Records and Video (Lincoln Center), Jazz Department Manager at Virgin Records (Union Square),  Barista at Cooper’s Coffee Bar (Upper West Side), Delivery Van Driver (Long Island City, Queens), IT Department (Wall Street), Customer Service (Downtown Brooklyn), Financial Head-Hunter (South Street Sea Port, Manhattan), Human Resources (North Bronx), Non-Profit Executive (Harlem), Case Worker (Midtown Eastside, Manhattan), City Employee (South Bronx), and so many more.

As I looked back, I realized that throughout every work experience, I was always in a constant state of teaching and learning. Engaging in conversations with people from backgrounds that were different than mine, taking turns teaching one another about our cultures, traditions and discovering our similarities.

I want us to work together to teach and uplift one another, to become one locally-focused global community.

In Unity,

Timothy ‘StonenDancer’ Coleman

Recent Video featuring my service

While building up the necessary components to launch Coleman Global Initiative, LLC., I maintain a day job. In that position, I work with families in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, NY., to bring much-needed services to the community.

As the District point person for the My Brother's Keeper Grant, I am the project manager for over $2M+ in funding over a 4-year period. I lead our team on the writing and implementation of the awarded funding and work with vendors to create engaging learning opportunities for Principals, Assistant Principals, Teachers, parents and students.

As the Executive Producer of this video for Community School District 7, I worked with Take 2 Film Academy to create a digital profile of our work in the South Bronx.
